Federal Funding
Challenge & Response
Kansas City PBS, 90.9 The Bridge and Flatland exist because of community members who believe in the power of public
media and invest in it. In 昀椀scal year 2026, that commitment was put to the test, and the outcome was overwhelming.
In July 2025, Congress eliminated previously approved federal funding for public media, resulting in a $1.8 million funding
gap for Kansas City PBS, or about 13% of our annual budget.
Faced with an unprecedented challenge, staff remained focused on continuing to provide the trusted journalism,
education, music, arts and cultural programming our audiences rely on. We stayed focused on serving our community, and
our supporters responded with overwhelming generosity.
The federal funding loss and annual shortfall will continue to create challenges in the years ahead. However, with deep
gratitude to a community that values and invests in public media, Kansas City PBS is well positioned to meet those
challenges and continue serving our region.
